Basket Weaving
Updated: Apr 19, 2022

So last week I was scrolling as you do and came across a lovely post from suzie Grieves aka @foragedfibres ... Ivy weaving.
I’ve always wanted to weave, but one thing and another comes up and I don’t get the materials and forget about it until the next basket inspiration comes along and that process of yay I’m going to do this...then forgetting and getting sidetracked starts again.
Well not this time! Ivy is something I have PLENTY of - it’s practically bursting out of my back garden. So last week myself and the children cut down the ivy, stripped it of its leaves and using Suzies lovely images as a visual guide I set to work.
Now this basket isn’t technically perfect by any means, it’s raggedy, it’s rough around the edges and that’s what I love about it! A basket that could have been made by some magical woodland fairies. The little one has certainly been taken by it and it’s started that fire of learning for myself and the children.
I have cut down more ivy - and I plan to make another this week. The older two are making fruit bowls (which we are finding our way through) and I’m going to be making a frame for the little one to weave with. I’ll photograph how I make it for those wanting a little more of a prompt, but if you want to have a go with some local ivy then head over to @foragedfibres (I’ll pop the post in my stories on Instagram and highlights) and have a go. I advise you to soak any of the cuttings first to soften them, they will be less likely to tear and break that way, a lot of mine as new growth so really supple to use.
Thank you Suzie for the inspiration
