Spring painting on bread

Well it’s not quite swing in the air around here but spring is certainly putting a little skip in my step. Whilst we are still in a period of preparation in Lent I wanted to start to think toward the great Easter Feast we would be celebrating (I had Covid last Easter so this one is much anticipated). I really wanted to try something new with the bread rolls this year and so I have been experimenting with some painting on bread.
Easter is a big event here, even more so than Christmas, but what I love about this great feast and celebration of Christs Resurrection is that is still feels (despite aisles of Easter Eggs and Bunnies in the Supermarket) a lot less commercialised than Christmas.
So I have been coming up with an Easter menu plan which I will share with recipes once I have it finalised and one of the ideas I had was for beautifully painted bread rolls, I have seen very impressionist looking cakes with beautiful buttercream on. And so alongside those I wanted our table to feel like a garden of Spring Flowers. Now this attempt today is my first attempt at painting then read, but I thought I would share it today to give you time to practice and have a go yourself!
To paint the bread
You will need a good quality food colouring (natural or otherwise) I had some Wilton cake colouring handy to practice but will be using more natural derived colourings going forward. Dilute the colouring in either Vodka or Glycerin (I used glycerin) . Bake your bread, I used a basic white bread recipe from Allinson (click the link for the recipe) I then gently rubbed white glutinous rice flour (this is important as it keeps the colours bright) over the bread at its final stage before the oven. I diluted the colouring and painted. Now I haven't any brushes spare which I don't use for painting so I will be buying some cheap fine paintbrushes to use with subsequent practices.
The result for a first attempt was really pretty (and four year old approved) looking forward to sharing more progress as we move toward Easter.

Have fun trying it yourself!
