Deep Fried Dandelions

Updated: Oct 4

So I’ve really wanted to take up foraging for a while and thought why not start with the humble dandelion? The past few years on nature walks we have picked wild blackberries out and about so I wanted to really give it a good go this year.

.

I have so many growing in my garden this time of year it makes sense to pick them and use them in seasonal salads.

.

It has been a challenge getting my children to eat something they are used to seeing pop up in the garden as a ‘weed’, we enjoyed the leaves and heads in a salad last week and this week I thought I would be a bit tricky and deep fry them in a spiced batter.

.

I threw some garlic powder, sumac, a little paprika, salt and pepper in a bowl with flour and water and whisked to a batter. I dipped them and deep fried them in olive oil until they were crispy, drizzling with a little honey to serve.

.

I actually thought they were really tasty as did all but one of the children! I am enjoying introducing them to foraging. It’s definitely a life skill I think everyone should have, to make the most of what the world has to offer. Do you forage? Is there anything you love foraging for and what’s available in the part of the world where you are?
